Below you will learn what type of insurance for foreigners is relevant for you.<\/p>\n<div class=\"box-fixa\"><em>Always have your health insurance card with you! If you have arranged commercial health insurance, you should also always have a document proving you have paid for the insurance with you.<\/em><\/div>\n<h3><strong>When is a migrant covered by the public healthcare system?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Foreigners fall within the Czech public healthcare system if they have permanent residence in the CR or if they are employees of employers with a registered office or permanent residence in the CR. Under certain conditions, EU citizens and their family members can also become part of the public healthcare system, as well as other groups, such as aplicants for international protection, temporary protection holders, asylum seekers, and subsidiary protection holders. They all have the same access to healthcare services paid for by public health insurance just like other policy holders.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"box-fixa\"><\/span>As of 1 January 2024, all foreigners under the age of 18 who have a <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolevsech.eu\/en\/potrebuji-resit\/pobyt-na-uzemi-ceske-republiky\/#Long-term%20Residence\">valid long-term residence permit<\/a> are now covered by public health insurance. The cost of the insurance is paid by the child&#8217;s parents. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More information is available <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolevsech.eu\/en\/news\/verejne-zdravotni-pojisteni-pro-deti-s-dlouhodobym-pobytem\/\">here<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Insurance for EU citizens<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU citizens must have health insurance in the CR based on their <\/span><b>economic activity and actual residence<\/b>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"bullet\">\n<li><b>EU citizens employed in the CR <\/b>must join the Czech healthcare system and <strong>deregister from their home country&#8217;s insurance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Economically inactive EU citizens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be insured in the CR if they <strong>prove temporary residence or actual residence in the CR <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(e.g. lease agreement, utility bills etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"613\">EU citizens not insured in the CR<\/strong> remain <strong>covered by health insurance from their home country<\/strong> and are entitled to a <strong>European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)<\/strong>, which grants access to<strong> essential healthcare<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"box-ok\"> For inquiries about healthcare coverage, contact the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kancelarzp.cz\/en\/homepage\/\"><b>Health Insurance Office<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the state administration\u2019s contact point for health insurance. <\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Commercial Health Insurance for Foreigners<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Other groups of migrants (sole traders and other self-employed persons, economically inactive family members of foreigners and migrant students) have to pay for what is called a <strong>commercial health insurance <\/strong>in the Czech Republic<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Generally, there are 2 types of commercial health insurance: <strong>1) insurance of necessary and urgent healthcare for travel (travel insurance for foreigners) and 2) comprehensive health insurance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"box-fixa\"><em>If you apply for a long-term residence permit in the CR or its extension, you have to prove that you have arranged <strong>comprehensive health insurance <\/strong>for foreigners! Insurance has to be paid for the whole period of the expected residence (up to 2 years).<\/em><\/div>\n<p>If you have arranged commercial insurance, you will be treated only by a limited number of doctors and facilities \u2013 those that have a contract with your insurance company. Therefore, ask your insurance company for a <strong>list of contracted doctors<\/strong> and facilities.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, the doctor may require payment in cash. Your insurance company will reimburse you, so be sure to request proof of payment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"box-fixa\"><em>Always read the terms and conditions of your insurance policy carefully and find out what are the exemptions in coverage!<\/em><\/div>\n<h3><strong>I am going abroad \u2013 can I suspend my health insurance?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Commercial health insurance is paid for in advance and therefore it is not possible to cancel or to suspend it before going abroad from the CR.<\/p>\n<p>Public health insurance can be suspended if you consistently stay outside the CR for more than 6 months.
