Reduced Transit Fine Extended, Number of Ticketless Passengers Continues to Drop

The policy of cutting fines in half if a rider buys an annual pass was introduced on 23rd November 2017 as a part of the Nejedeš načerno? (You’re Not Riding Black, Are You?) campaign. To date, 5,378 ticketless passengers have taken advantage of the discount to get an annual pass of the Prague Integrated Transport. As a result, on 14th January the Prague councillors decided to extend the reduced transit fine policy for an indefinite period and to declare the testing period over. The inspectors have come to a satisfying conclusion: compared to the previous year, the number of fines imposed for 2018 dropped by 14.4 percent.

The “black passengers”, as ticketless riders are commonly called, can reduce the fine for a ride without a valid ticket to just CZK 400 (from CZK 800) if they also purchase an annual coupon for CZK 3,650. “The half-fine campaign is extremely successful. More than 5,000 black passengers have been motivated to buy an annual coupon. They can travel for only CZK 10 per day for the whole year, and this means a long-term reduction of the total number of ticketless passengers. Numbers have shown us that it definitely makes sense to continue,” says Adam Scheinherr, deputy mayor for transport.
