Registration and Change of a Vehicle Owner
Cars in the Czech Republic must be registered in the register of road vehicles. Registration must be arranged for newly purchased cars, and cars purchased by new owners must be re-registered.
The registration can be arranged at any municipal office with extended powers, regardless of the place of residence of the car owner. A list of the relevant offices can be found on the website of the Ministry of Transport.
When transferring ownership of a vehicle, the original owner and the new owner must submit a joint application to register the change of vehicle ownership. The application may also be submitted by one of the parties based on a notarised power of attorney from the other party.
Detailed information on vehicle ownership transfers can be found on the Citizen Portal under the Registration of a change of a vehicle owner section.
A power of attorney, if used, must bear an officially authenticated signature of the principal.
If the other party does not cooperate in the vehicle transfer, the law allows, under certain conditions, for the application to be filed by only one of the parties to the transfer.
Where to Arrange Registration of Vehicles in Prague
In Prague, the Prague City Hall administers the vehicle register through several offices.
You can find the current list of offices, office hours, and the online reservation system on the website of the Register of Vehicles of the Prague City Hall.
Before visiting the office, we recommend that you check which documents are currently required and, if possible, make an online appointment.
Important Information for Operation of a Vehicle
Every motor vehicle operated on public roads must have valid motor vehicle liability insurance (known as ‘povinné ručení’ – compulsory liability insurance).
Vehicles are also subject to regular technical inspections and emissions testing to the extent specified by law.
For using toll motorways in the Czech Republic, you must purchase an electronic motorway vignette.
As of 1 January 2024, the Czech Republic issues only a single vehicle registration certificate. Previously issued registration certificates remain valid.
