Public Health Insurance for Children with Long Term Residence

As of 1 January 2024, all foreigners under the age of 18 who have a valid long-term residence permit are now covered by public health insurance.

Attention! This change does not apply to children who have been issued a long-term visa (a sticker in the passport).

Inception and termination of insurance

Participation in the public health insurance scheme is mandatory by law; it is not possible to opt for commercial health insurance. However, you may choose a health insurance company for your child. An overview of health insurance companies is available on the website of the Ministry of the Interior. The child automatically becomes a public health insurance participant from the day of collecting their first long-term residence permit card (biometric card). The insurance terminates upon reaching the age of 18 or on the day the long-term residence expires. After that it is necessary to arrange commercial insurance.

Premium payment

The cost of public health insurance is paid by the child’s parents for each calendar month. The premium is always due by the 8th day of the following month and amounts to CZK 2,552 per month.

Child Born in the CR

A child born to a parent (mother or father) with a valid long-term residence permit is covered by public health insurance from birth. However, the child’s parents have to apply for a long-term residence permit for the child within 60 days from the child’s birth.

It is also the parent’s obligation to notify the health insurance company of the fact that the child was born within 8 calendar days from the child’s birth. The insurance company cannot be chosen in this case. The child must be insured with the same health insurance company as the child’s mother on the day of birth. If the mother does not have public health insurance, then the child has to be insured with the same health insurance company as the father. The premium has to be paid by the child’s parents.

Health insurance companies usually want you to come in person to one of their branches to register a new-born child. After that, you can make your arrangements online using their apps.
