Easter in Prague is one of the most significant spring celebrations. As a tradition, the city centre and beyond will come alive with decorations, markets, and a cultural programme that blends folk traditions with the daily life of the metropolis from 21st March to 12th April 2026.
The main events are centred on Old Town Square, where visitors will find dozens of stalls offering Easter treats and decorations, as well as a supporting programme on stage. A more peaceful atmosphere can be found on Mariánské Square, where you will see demonstrations of traditional crafts, an exhibition of folk costumes, and stalls run by social enterprises, sheltered workshops, and small artisans.
Easter holidays in 2026: Good Friday falls on 3rd April and Easter Monday on 6th April. Both days are public holidays in Czechia. While most stores remain open on Good Friday, large retail stores must be closed on Easter Monday.
Our main Easter traditions include ‘pomlázka’ (whip) – boys symbolically whip girls with woven willow branches as this, according to the traditions, keeps them vital and healthy. In return, girls give the boys painted eggs or sweets. ‘Kraslice’, i.e. decorated eggs, are among the main symbols of spring and new life. Typical Easter treats also include ‘mazanec’ (sweet bread with raisins) and lamb-shaped cake.
Easter in Prague offers an opportunity to experience traditions right in the city streets and enjoy the festive atmosphere in the historic centre.
